Let's say I break into your house....

I am sure that if you read yesterday's post, you can guess my feelings on the issue of illegal immigration facing America.

After my post yesterday, I found a post from one of my friends. I only wish I had thought of this first:

A lady wrote the best letter in the Editorials in ages!!! It explains things better than what you hear on TV.

Her point:

Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration.

Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay indefinitely.

Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.

Let's say I break into your house. Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave.

But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors. I've done all the things you don't like to do. I'm hardworking and honest, (except for when I broke into your house).

According to the protesters:

You are Required to let me stay in your house.
You are Required to add me to your family's insurance plan.
You are Required to Educate my kids.
You are Required to Provide other benefits to me & to my family.

(My husband will do all of your yard work because he is also hardworking and honest, except for that breaking in part.)

If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who
will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my RIGHT to be there.

It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm
just trying to better myself. I'm a hardworking and honest person, except
for well, you know, I did break into your house.

And oh yeah, I get a free education, where you have to pay your own way
through college. (TEEHEE)

And what a deal it is for me!!! I live in your house, contributing only a
fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it
without being accused of cold, uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and bigoted
behavior.

Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you to learn MY LANGUAGE!!! So you can communicate
with me. And don't forget make sure your forms are in MY language - I need to understand them.

Why can't people see how ridiculous this is?! Only in America.

If you agree, pass it on ( in English ). Share it if you see the
value of it.

If not blow it off......... Along with your future Social Security funds,
and a lot of other things.

And that is the best and most simple explanation I've ever heard.

Feel free to comment your opinions if you agree or even if you don't.

Unfortunately, it's not that simple.

It's difficult for me to sympathise with these people because I and my parents came to America legally.

Forcing businesses to pay a living wage to legal residents is unpalatable to the business owners.

Most of these people are able to get away with what they're doing partly because businesses don't have to pay them as much (or provide benefits) as they would pay legal residents. Legalising all of them will cost businesses a lot of money as well.

More strictly enforcing the laws and deporting the lot of them is also unpalatable to businesses, because they would immediately lose their cheap labour.

And those are just the costs to businesses. I'm not even going into the costs to the government/tax payers.

I agree with you in principle, however I don't think the solution is as easy as, "Deport them all". I do agree that they have a misplaced sense of entitlement.

My mom is one of those people who came to this country LEGALLY. With that being said neither one of us think it's right for people to come over here illegally and expect the rest of us to shell out a living for them. And I can't tell you how AGGRAVATING it is that these illegals come over and have the nerve to expect us to know spanish while they don't bother to learn english. Oh and for those who think if we deport them no one will mow our lawns or take our trash are stupid and ignorant because I promise you that there will be someone to take those type of jobs over. As you can see I'm not for the illegals taking over our country and expecting to have the same rights as the rest of us. Do what regular people like my mom did and come in this country legally, oh and she is now a citizen if anyone was wondering. I will now get off my soapbox.

Well I'm not from the US but I do believe that anyone wanting to enter another country, should, oh do it LEGALLY. And if in a new country, oh, maybe FOLLOW THAT COUNTRIES RULES. I love that letter you posted....very well written!

That was such a great letter, and I, like you, only wish I had thought of it first. I live in an area where we are surrounded by orchards of all kinds and a lot of illegal immigrants are here for the work. The arguement I am most tired of hearing is "Why should we be allowed to kick them out when this country was built by immigrants." That may be so, but most of them came here legally. They had to sign as soon as they got off of their boats.
I get so angry when I think about the fact that my mother was a single mother, stuggling to make ends meet and support her daughter and scrape enough money to send me to college but these people don't have that worry. I now have three kids and we are praying that we have enough to give them the education they all three deserve. Why are we forced to struggle when we play by the rules?

I paid $3,000 to come to this country legally and stay legally. I'm from Canada.

But if I'd come from Cuba, all I'd have to do is touch US soil, and no one can kick me out.

I'm college educated. I speak two languages. I word hard. I pay taxes. And yet, I've had to jump through lots of hoops an pay lots of money to be allowed to be here.

When I had my son, I was self-employed. I didn't have maternity health insurance, because you can't have it when you're self employed. When my pregnancy went bad and I was forced to have an emergency c-section, we were left with $12,000 worth of medical bills. If I'd been an illegal immigrant, I could have had my baby for free at the county hospital.

How is that fair, exactly?

So the whole idea of amnesty, kind of ticks me off massively.

To all commenter's so far - I totally heart you guys! I was really worried about posting on such a controversial topic and what it might start. But I really am just so frustrated with the whole situation and I'm trying hard to start saying what I really think and feel. I know that it's not that simple. I mean the explanation is the most simple. There is obviously more..much more..to this topic...but this is a really simple analogy for those who have trouble understanding what the problems are.
Seriously, Totally Heart you!
