#100HappyDays..What is it all about?

I am sure by now many of you have come across the hash tag " #100HappyDays " on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. So what is it? The general idea is for you to take one picture a day of something that makes you happy and post it to your social media of choice for 100 days in a row.

When you go to the 100 Happy Days website there are no clues to the origination of the project. I had to do a little digging and found this interview with Dmitry Golubnichy, the creator of the project. In a nutshell he started a mission in his own life to find more happiness and then decided to challenge the rest of us. Pretty cool, huh?

Joining the project is simple. You just head over to the website, fill out a little pledge box and go.

The shocking part is the calculation that 71% of people fail this challenge. I admit, I was shocked by this number. Snapping a photo and posting doesn't take that long and even if you use Instagram it requires no more than a few extra seconds while you choose a filter.  Can it really be that stopping to find one thing in your day that makes you happy is that hard?  Are we intimidated by that? I really don't know the answer. I feel that the real issue isn't time, as many state, but that we don't feel the need to make time in our life for Happy. We are always busy trying to get something, earn something, or find something to get to the happy that we forget to stop and just be happy.

I began the project 20 days ago and am enjoying it very much. It's kind of interesting going through your day and suddenly thinking, "There. That moment right there is my happy thought."

Have you Taken or will you take the challenge?

What's your Happy?

Let the Battle of the Story Begin...

So if any of you read yesterday's post then you know that I was having trouble finishing a story. And many of you awesome peeps out there gave me great ideas.

We are officially having a Bloggy Story Battle!! And you, my dearest readers..friends...fans..(ok, I promised not to pull any voting 'strings' but a little buttering up never hurt ;-P)..will be the judges :-D

Boo!
Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween to one and all!

I grew up in a religious household and Halloween was considered the 'devils holiday' by my church, therefore we did not celebrate or participate in Halloween festivities. Once I was older my church began hosting a 'fall festival' on Halloween for all the children in the church and any others who chose to participate. It was a night full of games, fun and treats.

I had never been trick or treating until I had my own children. My husband had to guide me the first Halloween in everything from decorating to costumes. It had just never been part of my life until then. Now it is easily one of my favorite holidays. I love the decorations, the adorable costumes, and the socialization that happens in my neighborhood between parents when walking their child from house to house. I guess I am a believer that ever holiday is what you make of it.

As the holiday approached this year I became curious about the true history of Halloween. Where it came from, how it evolved and if it really was a holiday dedicated to nothing more than devils and demons. What I found actually surprised and intrigued me. As it turns out, many of the traditions we celebrate today during Halloween are actually evolved from traditions began by the church! Here are some excerpts I found on the History Channel website as to the origins of Halloween. I hope you give it a read. You might be surprised how the holiday actually came to be!
Ancient Origins

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).

The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.

To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities.

During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.

By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain.

The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of "bobbing" for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.

By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints', and All Souls', were called Hallowmas.
Modern Traditions

The American tradition of "trick-or-treating" probably dates back to the early All Souls' Day parades in England. During the festivities, poor citizens would beg for food and families would give them pastries called "soul cakes" in return for their promise to pray for the family's dead relatives.

The distribution of soul cakes was encouraged by the church as a way to replace the ancient practice of leaving food and wine for roaming spirits. The practice, which was referred to as "going a-souling" was eventually taken up by children who would visit the houses in their neighborhood and be given ale, food, and money.

The tradition of dressing in costume for Halloween has both European and Celtic roots. Hundreds of years ago, winter was an uncertain and frightening time. Food supplies often ran low and, for the many people afraid of the dark, the short days of winter were full of constant worry. On Halloween, when it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world, people thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter.
Evolution Of A Holiday

As European immigrants came to America, they brought their varied Halloween customs with them. Because of the rigid Protestant belief systems that characterized early New England, celebration of Halloween in colonial times was extremely limited there.

It was much more common in Maryland and the southern colonies. As the beliefs and customs of different European ethnic groups, as well as the American Indians, meshed, a distinctly American version of Halloween began to emerge. The first celebrations included "play parties," public events held to celebrate the harvest, where neighbors would share stories of the dead, tell each other's fortunes, dance, and sing. Colonial Halloween festivities also featured the telling of ghost stories and mischief-making of all kinds. By the middle of the nineteenth century, annual autumn festivities were common, but Halloween was not yet celebrated everywhere in the country.

Worst School Picture Contest!

The fabulous MommaK over at Petroville is hosting the 'Worst School Picture 2007' contest this week! Head over there, have a giggle, and let her know who you think is should be the big winner!

True Confessions of an Addict

I have many addictions. I am a coffee addict. I'm a blog addict. I'm addicted to kissing Prince Charming. I'm addicted to chocolate.

Today is about a different addiction. Some people will criticize me for it. Others will understand.

Hello, my name is Chris. I'm addicted to night time T.V. (You expected something really juicy didn't ya?)

I am positively beside myself for the next two weeks to arrive. It's season premiere week and I already am realizing that one tivo is just not going to cut it.

So in a preliminary celebration of the season premiers, here are some links to help you find your favorite shows!

The T.V. Addict - I found this blog a few weeks ago and it has helped my addiction continue to go strong.

The T.V. Squad - Another great list of dates (includes a few not on T.V. Addict)

I can't seem to find any information on the return dates of Jericho or Dresden Files, so if anyone hears anything please let me know!

So grab your remote and let the tivo'ing begin!

Let's play a game...

I had an idea today. I won't go as far as to say it's brilliant, but it will be humiliating, embarrassing and painful fun.

I want everyone out there to send me one picture of you from the age 1-10yrs. (And yes, that does mean you lurkers out there!).

Next Friday I will post the pics and we will see who can match the blog with the blogger.

And to those of you whom I actually own a picture of (and you know who you are!!!) you have had your arm twisted been fairly warned that I will post them if you don't pick one and send it on your own :-D

Please send them here: Serendipitymine@gmail.com

These commercials are way too funny to miss!

Meerkat Manor is Alex's favorite show. It is sort of "Sopranos" meets "All My Children" but with fur. He absolutely loves it (and I admit, he's converted me to a fan). As I was fast forwarding commercials watching Mythbusters, something caught my eye and made me rewind. I've never laughed so hard.

This is one of the funniest and best commercials I've ever seen. Turn it up, the music totally makes it better.

My Family's 'So you think you can Dance' audition tapes..

It's Friday and I don't know about you, but I need a good laugh after this week!

So in honor of the season finale of 'So You Think You Can Dance' last night, I thought you might enjoy seeing my family's audition tapes for the show. Obviously I don't have Sabra's extension or Lacy's arse shaking technique and thus we didn't make the cut. But there's always next year and the dream for a ticket on that Hot Tamale Train!

Alex and Liberty:

Bean:

Alex and Prince Charming:

Prince Charming and I:

Hope they made you giggle :-) Take a second and make your own dance!

Pugs gone wild..

Today is my little Bean's 2nd birthday. Unfortunately blogger and my pics are not getting along. So her special birthday post will have to be postponed until tomorrow.

When I found this though I decided seeing it was almost as cute as Bean and made me laugh almost as much as she does, that I'd post it :-) Liberty is the proud owner of Pocket Puggle named Jelly Belly and this is just toooo funny. Enjoy!

My newest favorite Finds....

I have added some new links in my blogroll but I wanted to make sure to mention them 'cause I think they are really kick Arse cool!

The first is my friend Gypsy Queen. She has an amazing writing talent and a witty, funny and honest outlook on life. When you start to read her blog you want to know her, not just read her. She makes you feel like you've found a new best friend.

My next new find, I have to credit to Gypsy. Word Imperfect is a fun, sometimes giggle out loud read that is very addicting. The Word Imp puts up a daily word and her visitors create different meanings. The results are very interesting and funny!

Last, but certainly not least, is my moms new find, Scrumdilly-do! The name alone makes you want to read! The crafts, links and ideas on this site are amazing! I just wish I had found earlier in our summer!

Let me know what you think!

Movies You Should See
Part Two

I am having so much fun doing this movie series! There are some seriously kick butt things coming out in theaters in the next year. I am very happy to see the recent trend of bringing books to life and very happy that most movies are doing these books justice (with the exception of Eragon. We.will.not.even.mention.that.horrid.movie.)

So, without further ado, Here's today's movie list:

Golden Compass
Release Date:December 7, 2007

Based on the 'His Dark Materials' book trilogy by Phillip Pullman, this looks like a fun and interesting movie and the scenery looks amazing.

----------------------------

Stardust
Release Date: August 10, 2007

Based on the book Stardust by Neil Gaiman. In a countryside town bordering on a magical land, a young man makes a promise to his beloved that he'll retrieve a fallen star by venturing into the magical realm

----------------------------

Beowulf
Release Date: November 16, 2007

This movie is based on an Old English heroic epic poem from the late middle ages. Yep, you read me right!

Although no trailer yet seems to exist for this move, the cast includes such legends as Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins and John Malkovich. The screenplay was co-written by Neil Gaiman, the author of Stardust (mentioned above).

The warrior Beowulf must fight and defeat the monster Grendel who is terrorizing towns, and later, Grendel's mother, who begins killing out of revenge.

This sounds like a potentially amazing movie, but I admit lack of trailer and screen shots does cause me some worry. Of course, the author (whoever that may be), is probably just pleased that it's hitting theaters at all!

----------------------------

Hairspray
Release Date: July 20, 2007

I know, this doesn't fit my book themed movie day, but this movie has childhood memories for me, and it's my blog, so I'm adding it! My childhood friend and I watched the original Hairspray whenever I spent the night at her house, and we would then spend the rest of the evening singing the songs. Ahhh. I can almost smell *cough*gag*hack*cough* the aquanet. The new update does look fun and spunky. Oh. And it has John Travolta dressed as a girl. That's right folks, a whole movie with John Travolta in drag. Who'd wanna miss that???

Summer Loving...Happend so Fast...

Well, it's that time of year when the chill has left air, Jack Bauer has made it through his next 24 hours, Flowers are blooming, Christina makes a mistake and George has a decision, School is almost over, We found out who Survived for the million, Everyone is starting to grill out, and The newest Idol has been decided.

Yes boys and girls, the Summer T.V. season has begun. For people who like their television this means long months of...well...pretty much nadda. zip. zilch.

Except this year! Finally the networks have realized that mommies do have a chance to sit down in the evenings and would like some entertainment after the kids hit the hay.

On top of that, they have decided to feed my 'reality t.v.' tooth with some very interesting shows! I thought I would share with you the top shows I'm watching this summer.

1. The Lot

This is a 'reality show' where wanna be hopeful movie directors are given challenges, tasks and missions to prove that they have what it takes to win a million dollar movie deal and a job at Dreamworks Studio!!

So far I have found it to be fun, interesting, and a great sparking tool for my creativity. Prince Charming and I are constantly pausing to discuss our ideas and what would have worked better. And some of the things these 'directors' come up with is amazing, terrifying or just plain amusing. I am very excited and happy with this show so far!

2. So You think You can Dance

I am a HUGE fan of this show. HUGE. I watched it religiously last year and just adored the performers (YEY BENJI!!).

So you Think you can Dance is by the producers of American Idol and is very similar in format. Instead of belting out notes, these guys have 24 hours to learn a dance routine and dazzle the judges so they aren't sent packing. Half the fun in this show is watching those who try out and seeing who knows how to shake it and who just shouldn't.

The judges are nicer than A.I. for the most part (Although, Nigel, come on. There is no reason to be such an ass. They suck. Send them home. Don't ruin their lives over it. It's bad enough being rejected. Mary: PLEASE.DONT.LAUGH. It's annoying and grates.)

The dance talent is unreal and totally amazing. Watch it and love it (oh, check back towards the end so I can tell you who to vote for..hehee).

3. Hells Kitchen

Gordon Ramsey is back! There is nothing soft, sweet or even a little friendly about this show. Ramsey expects above perfection. If you can't handle the fire...get out of his kitchen.

This show is not for the light of heart or those offended by mean spirited temper. Although Ramsey has shown his more humane and friendly side on his BBC America show, The F Word, previews for Hell's Kitchen are showing this to be his meanest season yet. I don't know how to explain it, but this is one kind of drama I enjoy watching.

4. Pirate Masters
This show has yet to air, and I am having some high hopes for it. Same people who brought us Survivor, thought up Pirate Masters.

The idea is:
16 modern day pirates embark on a high-sea adventure around the caribean island of Dominican in search of hidden treasure that will total $1 Million. Only one pirate will win the booty and claim the title of 'Pirate Master'

The previews show the characters to be a bit annoying, a trait that the producers seem to carry over from recent Survivor casting. That is a bit disappointing, but overall I have high hopes for the show.

Check these out and have some fun this summer, and if you have any 'must see' summer shows..Please let me know in the comments!

When I'm an Old Woman...
...(oh wait..I'm not yet??)...

Jesse over at 'For the Love of Peas and Monkeys'(seriously, is that not the cutest name ever!) posted this meme last week. I thought it was a really fun one so decided to tag myself.

When I am an Old Woman I hope to:

1. Be 'that' old couple who walks past, making everyone hope they have that when they are old.

2. Have all my hair (I know, I know. Vain much?)

3. Have at least 8 grand babies that I can spoil mercilessly and see endlessly.

4. Travel. I don't want to sit at home with my cat. I want to travel and see what I haven't had time to see.

5. Take my grand babies on vacation with me. (my grandparents did this and they are some of my most cherished and amazing memories)

Are you disappointed I never mentioned wearing purple??

When I am an old Woman I will not:

1. Get my hair cut in the standard short poofy permed hairstyle. (Yes, I really am that obsessed with my old lady hair.)

2. Complain my family doesn't call enough.(I'll just show up and force them to love me...haha)

3. Own more than 3 cats

4. Talk about my hemorrhoids, bowel movements, or other bodily failings, irritations, and unusual functioning in public or in front of family. (Some things should really just be saved for your 'Golden Girl' friends.)

5. Wear standard issue polyester pants.

Mrs. Joe, Lisa, Sharpie and Sassy: Tag, You're it!

Friends, Queens, Trolls, Coochies, Photo's and more...

I would like to inform you that I'm very crabby today. Why does it matter and why should I be informing you? Because for the past two days it's taken all my strength not to strike out like a cobra after moving prey at anyone and everything around me. I ran out of my medicine, I have had no hot water for the past 4 days which means no showers or shaving for a week. Can you say Ewww? I have been taking 'wash cloth' baths, but they do nothing for shaving. So Prince Charming has been romancing a hedge hog for the past 4 days. And, to top all that off my 'friend' has been here for 8 days. EIGHT DAYS. Except she's here one day and not the next. And then she's there in the morning but not at night. Then she's there at 1 a.m. demanding attention and gone by 6a.m. when I get up. I haven't had a visit this long (or annoying, or emotional, or bloated or irrational) since before I was preggers with Bean almost 3 years ago. Oh, and I have 5 kids this weekend. FIVE.

Yes. Apparently I am crazy and trying to get myself admitted somewhere. So, because you have already had to listen to me whine and moan this morning and are probably thinking, 'Why do I even bother coming here?' I decided I had best shut up and send you to more fun and happy places on a Friday.

Here's a list of places to go today that will make this trip worthwhile :

  • Did you feel it? The difference in the air last night? The change in the good ol' USA's atmosphere? The Troll Baby landed on US soil and is currently in a royal audience with the Queen of Spain! May the Lord Help Us!! ;-)

  • Ever Wondered if a Brazilian Wax is Painful? Do This by then and reach $10,000 and she will video her face while doing that! Did I confuse you yet? At least spread the word, mmmk?

  • Go to my other blog and Meet our newest and VERY funny friend. You Will laugh. I DARE you not too!

  • Want to see some great photo's? Go here (the new site launched today) to meet my photographer and see some of her amazing work!

  • Please share your favorite blogs (or website). I don't care what the topic or by who. I just want to 'expand' my horizons a bit and would love for you to leave me a new link in the comments.

I have FIVE kids this weekend remember? And a little league game. And two sets of baseball photo's. So please, send some good stuff (and maybe chocolate?!) my way!

Forgot your Age?
Just use Chocolate to remember again!

I always knew that choclate was multi-purpose. Revealing my age though? That's a new one!

From WikiHow:

Yes, it's true: If you are old enough to do mathematics and you like chocolate, you might be able to figure out your age. By crunching these numbers (including the weekly frequency of your preference for chocolate), your age is mathematically revealed. It's a nifty trick for kids learning basic mathematics, who can practice it on adults and elicit reactions of surprise and amusement. Try it out to see for yourself, and then read on to find out how it works.
Steps

1. Determine how many times a week you eat or want chocolate. It must be a number between 1 and 10, including 1 or 10.
* Let's say you eat chocolate 8 times a week (we won't tell).

2. Multiply that number by 2.
* 8 x 2 = 16

3. Add 5 to the previous result.
* 16 + 5 = 21

4. Multiply that by 50.
* 21 x 50 = 1050

5. Add 1757 if you've had a birthday this year. If you haven't had a birthday this year, add 1756.
* Let's say your birthday hasn't passed yet.
* 1050 + 1756 = 2806

6. Subtract your birth year.
* Assuming you were born in 1975...
* 2806 - 1975 = 831

7. You'll end up with a 3 digit number, the first digit (in the hundreds place) is how many times a week you eat or want chocolate (the number you specified in the first step). The next two numbers are your age!

It Actually worked for me! Visit the original page here to find out why!

Psychology of an M & M

Today I went here to have a little fun with Alex and let him build his version of me in chocolate. Talk about some insight into how observant your 8 year old can be! We had so much fun making mine that I had every member of the family create theirs. The outcome was surprising and very revealing :-)

Me:

I chose my body type because I am shaped that way (sort of) and I can be a bit nutty. Alex decided the hair looked just like mine (Yeah, after about 2 hours of straight ironing), and also I am pink 'cause Moms are 'sort of girls and girls are pink'.

He choose a Tiara because he says I'm 'the Queen of everything'. He picked out the gloves just because I like to look pretty sometimes and the boots because I always where 'those really big heeled boots'.

I wanted the camera accessory but he insisted I have the coffee cup because I 'always always have a coffee cup and if I don't have it then I get kinda crabby and don't know how to answer his questions'. Okay, so maybe I should cut down on the coffee. But really, do you know how hard it is to explain why we're called the Human Race on a Saturday morning on only 4 hours of sleep when you haven't had a sip of coffee yet??? Okay, then. Don't judge.

Prince Charming

PC designed his own chocolate alter ego, so I'm going to give my interpretation. He's a bit nutty too, thus the body shape. The dark red is because he likes to stand out without being overly obvious. Boots and gloves are because in many ways he's your 'guy next door' type. (I have no idea if that is actually a 'type' when it comes to guys, but whatever, it works)

The beer stein means he doesn't need caviar and red carpets to have a good time, while the drink umbrella implies he's usually the life of the party. The backwards hat is a symbol of his slightly rebel side.

I left my favorite part for last. His expression. To me, this just sums my dear PC up in one handsome, sarcastic, smart ass package. Oh. And the glasses are just 'cause he's smart as hell and blind as a bat.

Alex

This is how Alex explained his M & M:

Alex choose blue because it's his favorite color. The silly eyes are because he likes to be silly. His favorite toys are lego's and robots so he needed those cool arms 'cause they made him a super strong candy and that is really funny and silly and awesome. (yeah, he was excited.)

The mowhak was because he always wanted one because they are so neat to look at and spikey and because I won't let him get one in real life until he's older and can pay for the haircut by himself. The goatee is because he wishes he was older and in highschool because then he could buy a mowhawk. (Dang, I hope he outgrows this)

He picked these shoes because they look just like his black heely's and his heely's are really cool.
He wanted a teddy bear because it reminds him of his Teddy. His Teddy is his best friend and he's had him since he was a baby.

Liberty:

All I have to say is this M & M says everything you need to know about Liberty.

The hot pink is the color because she's a girl with attitude. The gloves and boots show that she's a little bit country, little bit tom boy, and a little bit elegant.

The necklace? That's easy. This girl is going to be high.maintenance.big.time. I honestly feel sorry for her future boyfriends. The smile and eyes are because even with all that attitude she is still sweet, caring, and loving from head to toe.

Tiara sums it all up perfectly. Princess, 120%.

Beanie:

I don't even have to go piece by piece on this one. The entire picture sums her up.

Sweet, loving, mischievous, totally girlie.

What kind of M & M are you?
